Separate Required Safeguards From Optional Technology
Forklift safety equipment is not identical across every class, model and workplace. Buyers should verify the data plate, brakes, steering, controls, horn and the safeguards supplied for the intended truck. High-lift rider trucks generally use an overhead guard, and a load backrest extension is used where needed to reduce the chance of a load falling rearward.
Seat belts or other operator restraints, lights, mirrors, backup alarms, warning strobes, cameras, speed controls, pedestrian alerts, stability aids and telematics may be installed depending on the model and application. Do not describe every optional device as an OSHA requirement. OSHA notes that additional visual or sound-producing devices should be selected where appropriate to the worksite.
Equipment features do not replace operator training, workplace evaluation, pedestrian controls, daily inspection or removal of an unsafe truck from service. Confirm the manufacturer’s instructions and the rules that apply to the specific workplace.
