Forklift capacity alone does not determine price. A 3-ton electric warehouse truck and a 3-ton rough-terrain forklift are different products. Start with capacity, then match machine type, load center, lift height, tires and included power equipment before you compare forklift prices.
2-ton, 3-ton, 5-ton and 15,000 lb forklift price comparisons
| Search specification | Capacity conversion | What changes the price comparison |
|---|---|---|
| 2-ton forklift | 4,409 lb if metric; 4,000 lb if US short tons | Confirm the unit and actual rated capacity. Compare the mast, load center and power package. |
| 3-ton forklift | 6,614 lb if metric; 6,000 lb if US short tons | Compare equivalent counterbalance or other truck types, with the same tires and lift height. |
| 5-ton forklift | 11,023 lb if metric; 10,000 lb if US short tons | Confirm surface, tires, attachment weight and capacity remaining at the required height. |
| 15,000 lb forklift | 7.5 US short tons; approximately 6.8 metric tonnes | Ask for the exact rating plate, configuration, freight plan and service support. |
Conversions above describe mass units, not a promise that a machine can safely handle that load in every configuration. Use the truck’s rated capacity at the actual load center, lift height and attachment arrangement.
Why a higher-capacity forklift can cost more
Larger trucks may require a different chassis, mast, tires, power system and freight arrangement. But an older large truck can have a lower asking price than a newer small truck. Compare new forklift prices separately from used forklift prices so age and condition do not distort the capacity comparison.
5 details to include in a capacity-based price request
- Maximum load weight, dimensions and center of gravity.
- Required lift height and clearance under doors or ceilings.
- Attachment type and its effect on rated capacity.
- Indoor floor, paved yard or rough terrain.
- Daily hours, preferred power source and delivery ZIP code.
Compare the right forklift class before the price
Use counterbalance forklifts for suitable general loading work, reach trucks for appropriate warehouse racking, and rough-terrain forklifts for suitable outdoor work. Our 5,000 lb forklift buying guide covers another commonly requested capacity.
How much does a 3-ton or 5-ton forklift cost?
Get a current configured price rather than multiplying a smaller truck’s price by its capacity. Ask each dealer to price the same rated truck, mast, power equipment, warranty and freight. Use the forklift price comparison checklist to separate the truck price from the delivered cost and optional items.
